Review Date: June 20, 2009
Reviewer: Douglas A. Henderson, Seoul, Korea
I love to ride and I have always been dissatisfied with my bicycle computers. I looked around for a GPS system but the cost always made me turn away, then I found Mainnav. I purchased the MG-950DM. Keep in mind that this is a data tracker not a navi. I believe that this system is a excellent entry system. It allows me to see where I have ridden, speed and elevation.

Pros:

-Large easy to read display.
-Shows altitude, time, total trip time, trip odometer.
-System will automatically rotate though the meters or you can select one and let it set.
-It record's a waypoint every second which will give very accurate tracks.
-Example of track-[...]
-Software that is provided is simple and exports out to google.
-If you have a digital camera and the time is set correctly the software will import the photos and correlate the time to the map.

Cons:

-Editing the track is difficult
-Slow to start.
-If you start tracking to soon after starting the track will jump around for the first 30-60 seconds.
-system only seems to work with Windows, I have not been able to make it work with Linux. I do not know about Apple.

For the price this is a great system. If you want a real navi, with heart rate and all the other bells and whistles then pay $300+ and get a Garmin.

I gave 4 stars because it does what it says it will do and nothing more. I am happy, but not wowwed. I plan on using it for a long time.

Good luck, happy riding!
user comment Mainnav MG 950d Sport Bluetooth GPS Data Logger with Cycle Computers for Running & Cycling (Bluetooth/USB, Weather Proof) Barely competent cycle computer and data logger

Review Date: October 11, 2008
Reviewer: Dale Trexel, Minnesota, USA
I purchased this product as an alternative to Garmin's monopoly on the GPS-enabled cycle computer market, and because the promise of NMEA output would enable geeky stuff like post-processing differential correction. Sadly, my experiences with the product are disappointing.

First, the battery does not seat well. When I got my product, I could not get it to power up until I did some searching and found some posts that discussed the battery connection problem. (http://www.navigadget.com/index.php/2007/12/21/mg-950d) Upon removing and re-inserting the battery, I got it to work, but since then I had my unit shut down on about 50% of my rides. Eventually I crammed the battery in place with a piece of cardboard and have not had the problem recur in the 4 rides I've done since then.

The controls are horrible. There are two buttons and one touch-sensitive area. To turn the thing on you have to click and hold the button 3 seconds. To start data logging you have to click and hold it another 3 seconds. To turn it off you have to hold it 5 seconds. It's a terribly annoying waste of time when you just want to get out and ride! Would a couple more buttons have made the thing that much more expensive?

And the display -- early images (see above link) showed the unit with a number of useful information readily available on the screen (like the Garmin units), but the product as released has only speed and below it a rotating display of other measurements. So if you want to know your altitude and time and distance traveled, you have to keep looking down at your computer in hopes of catching it at the right time.

The documentation is also as horrendous as the rest. How much would it have cost MainNav to pay someone with actual English skills to edit the manual? It's practically unusable, and fails to say anything about most of the advanced features that the advertising claims it has. Stuff like Bluetooth -- what data output does the bluetooth connection give you? Good luck trying to get that information out of the documentation.

Also, don't expect this to be a GIS-geek's tool. The "NMEA" output is a tiny subset of the total information in the NMEA specification, ruling out any post-processing or even a guess at what sort of data reliability you were getting at the time.

So ultimately if you want to know how fast you're going and post your track on Google Earth, this toy will work fine. But it's definitely not a serious GPS tool...or even anything remotely along those lines.

Software is easy to use. Plug it in, connect and download data from the weather station. Just what I needed!
user comment Brunton ADC IR Atmospheric Data Center Necessary but flawed

Review Date: December 2, 2008
Reviewer: Photographer, Oslo, Norway
If you want to get the logs off your ADC weather station, you need this dongle, since the ADC weather station does not support IrDA. Go figure. Also, there are no drivers for 64-bit Windows, which is annoying. The software supplied works, but it is certainly not top notch.

And because it is a high quality Garmin GPS device, you get many of the features GPS users have come to rely on, such as precise latitude, longitude, and altitude data. The Forerunner 101 is easy to use right out of the box and it delivers the benefits of GPS technology.

Although it lacks the rechargeable battery and PC connectivity features of the Forerunner 201, the 101 retains all of the other great features of the 201, at an even more affordable price. The Virtual Partner feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're traveling with for easy viewing.

Other Forerunner 101 features:

  • Mark specific locations, and then look-up and navigate to these points using an electronic map.
  • Amount of calories burned can be tracked and calculated over the course of a workout.
  • Lap history--such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace--can be stored for 5000 laps.
  • Performance data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide an accurate record.
  • Automated stopwatch provides auto-lap and auto-pause features.
  • Pace whistle sounds alert when you begin traveling slower or faster than your desired pace.
  • Time and distance whistles can be set to sound when you reach a specified duration or distance in your workout.

user comment GARMIN 010 00329 05 Forerunner 101 Wrist Mounted GPS Fitness Computer Revolutionized my running

Review Date: October 8, 2004
Reviewer: William Jankowski, Mystic, Connecticut
1. Super easy to use. Turn it on, wait until it syncs up with the satellites, push start, and it's off. Push stop when you want to stop. Reset the counters. The run is now in internal memory.

2. The unit's got a pretty sensitive reciever. Our neighborhood is pretty wooded, but it'll gain sync in our driveway, under a giant maple tree and smaller japanese maple. It holds it pretty well on the roads. I haven't tried a trail run - yet.

3. I don't think it's too obtrusive. My lovely wife thought it was a little too big to strap to her wrist. It does come with a band extender; Melissa is thinking about trying it again strapped to her upper arm. The disadvantage would be not being able to see the display, but if you're just interested in recording, it's not an issue. That, and most of the functions (mile marker, etc) have audible cueing. I can't hear the beeps over my iPod, though.

4. Nice features - Clear display, good backlight. The backlight automatically comes on when the unit has an alert (passing another mile, falling off pace, etc). The Training Partner is kind of nice. If Garmin keeps it when the Forerunner is updated, they could speed it up on downhills and slow it down on uphills (GPS gives elevation data).

Gripes:
1. The unit design is not poor by any stretch of the imagination. But, after the iBook and the iPod (not to mention small details like the international power adapters Apple has available that work with both items' power supplies), my standards are high. My gripe is that the UI is 6 buttons, all pretty similar size and texture, on the side of the unit. One of the reasons I'm skeptical of today's third mile split is because I accidentally turned the unit off between the 1st and 2nd miles. I stopped and turned it back on again, but it threw off the "odometer". Yes, I was an idiot for pushing and holding the power button (for like 3 seconds; it's not really easy to do by mistake), but the backlight is turned on by briefly pressing the power button.

2. It's missing the geeky GPS features, like a lat/long display, or the ability to select between different GPS data (WGS 84/UTM/etc - you either know what I'm talking about already, or you don't care). There are some work-arounds I've found (such as marking a waypoint at the current location to get lat/long), but I don't think I'm getting rid of my Magellan GPS 315 any time soon. I think this may be intentional on Garmin's part - why give away a big part of their market on a sub - $100 device. I think it'll work backpacking, especially if I take the time to pre-set waypoints. But I'm still mainly a map-and-compass kind of guy in any case. And the 101's "Back to start" feature ought to bail me out.

3. There's no ability to turn GPS on/off unless the machine can't acquire a satellite. There's also no ability to tell the unit where it is, so initial acquisition of a signal can last up to 30 minutes the first time you turn the unit on, or if you travel more than 500 miles with the unit off. In practicality, mine acquired signal in about 5 minutes right out of the box.

Product Description

Track your speed and distance while wearing a Polar training computer with the Polar G1 GPS sensor. A terrific alternative to the Polar S1 foot pod, the G1 is compatible with the Polar FT60 and FT80 wrist-top training computers. Once you're wearing the G1, the sensor employs SIRF StarIII GPS technology to measure speed and distance for sports that don't exceed 18.3 miles per hour, such as running, kayaking, cross-country skiing, or recreational inline skating. As the G1 compiles the data, your training computer will do the rest, putting you through the paces on your workout routine.

The easy-to-use, water-resistant sensor calculates its position by measuring the distance between itself and three or more GPS satellites. Note that GPS positioning requires satellite visibility to work, thus it will only work reliably outdoors, and not in valleys between tall trees and buildings. GPS signals also rely on radio frequencies (RF), and therefore won't go through metal or water. The G1, which works with AA batteries, offers a battery life of up to 10 hours in warm conditions or up to 15 hours in low-power mode. The sensor also weighs a lightweight 2.82 ounces.

About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.
